AUDITION NOTICE

Please note: Actors of all ages are encouraged to audition for the roles listed below.

MILLIE DILLMOUNT: A pragmatist who dreams big. She is an appealing, honest, feisty and unique young woman. She wavers between being a “modern” and a romantic, but she’s no pushover. She arrives in New York determined to acquire big city sophistication and a rich husband. Age range: 18-30. Belter/mezzo-soprano. Audition song: “Not for the Life of Me (Tag)” – may be asked to sing “Gimme, Gimme” and/or “Jimmy”

JIMMY SMITH: Millie’s love interest – even though he is not the wealthy man she seeks. He is quite the charmer, a brash city slicker with an irrepressible, buoyant personality who loves to have a good time. Meeting Millie makes him fall in love and want to settle down. Age range: 21-35. Tenor or high baritone. Audition song: “What do I Need with Love” – may be asked to sing, “I Turned the Corner”

MISS DOROTHY BROWN: Millie’s best friend. A classic old-fashioned beauty who has clearly lived in a bubble of extreme wealth her entire life, but her cluelessness in the ways of the real world is in no way haughty or snobbish; in fact, it is her charm. Age range: 18-30. Soprano. Audition song: “How the Other Half Lives” – may be asked to sing “Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life!”

MRS. MEERS: Striking and sinister, with a barracuda smile. She owns the Hotel Priscilla, a boarding house for young ladies – a mere front for her highly profitable sideline, white slave trading. She disguises herself as a Chinese woman, but she is, in fact, an American. (Chinese accent needed) Age range: 35-55. Belter/Alto. Audition song: “They Don’t Know”

TREVOR GRAYDON: Millie’s boss. He is bold, confident and very efficient. A refined and charming man who falls hard for Miss Dorothy. Age range: 25-40. Baritone. Audition song: “Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life!” – may be asked to sing “The Speed Test”

MUZZY VAN HOSSMERE: Jimmy’s stepmother. Glamorous, big hearted, fun loving and wise. A diva who knows how to have a good time while never losing sight of what really matters in life: love. Age range: 40-60. Alto. Audition song: “Only in New York”

BUN FOO: A man who is one of Mrs. Meers’s accomplices. With the help of his brother, he reluctantly helps Mrs. Mears in exchange for bringing their mother to America. Age range: 20-40. Baritone. Audition song: “Not For the Life of Me Reprise 1” – sung in Chinese.

CHING HO: Bun Foo’s brother. A much less willing accomplice to Mrs. Meers. He also reluctantly helps Mrs. Mears in exchange for bringing their mother to America. He falls hard for Miss Dorothy and saves her from a life of prostitution in South East Asia. Age range: 20-40. Baritone. Audition song: “Not For the Life of Me Reprise 1” – sung in Chinese.

MISS FLANNERY: The strict secretary to Trevor Graydon. She is suspicious of “moderns” like Millie. She is strong, loud and in charge. Age range: 20-50. Belter. Audition song: “Thoroughly Modern Millie” – may be asked to sing “Forget About the Boy”

HOTEL GIRLS: Lucille, Rita, Alice, Cora, Ruth, Mary, Ethel Peas; Aspiring actresses who are a tight knit group – most of them are out–of –work. They sing and dance often. Age range: 16-30. Audition song: “Thoroughly Modern Millie”

ENSEMBLE: There are many singing, dancing and acting roles in the ensemble. Age range: 16-50. Audition song: “Thoroughly Modern Millie”

Additional Information: Please be prepared to list all potential rehearsal conflicts on the audition form. Selected readings of the play will be used for the auditions.
